As 2024 comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on what an incredible year it has been for US Korfball. When I think back to where we started, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come in such a short amount of time. It’s been a year of growth, learning, and laying the groundwork for the future of our sport in the United States.
One of the most exciting milestones this year was seeing new korfball clubs and players spring up across the country. We’ve welcomed new teams in unexpected places, and it’s been heartening to see the enthusiasm of players who are discovering korfball for the first time. Their energy reminds me of why I got involved in this sport to begin with: its unique blend of teamwork, strategy, and inclusivity.
We also made strides in raising awareness about korfball. From demoing korfball to new audiences during college basketball half-times, to engaging with the adaptive sports community, and even inviting major league baseball mascots to shoot some korfs with us, every opportunity to showcase the game has brought us closer to building a stronger community. It’s not just about teaching people how to play but sharing the values that make korfball so special: gender equality, collaboration, and respect.
But this year was also not without its challenges. Starting and maintaining a nonprofit organization is no small feat, and there were moments when the weight of it all felt overwhelming. But those challenges were also opportunities to learn and grow. I’ve been reminded time and again that this is a team effort, and I am so grateful to everyone who has pitched in to make US Korfball what it is today. Whether you volunteered your time, attended a workshop, or simply cheered us on, your support has meant the world.
Looking ahead to 2025, I’m filled with optimism. We have big plans: expanding our outreach, growing our youth programs, and joining the international community. There’s so much potential, and I’m excited to see what we can achieve together.
To everyone who has been a part of this journey, thank you! Your passion and dedication inspire me every day. Let’s keep building this amazing community and sharing korfball with more people across the country.
Here’s to an even bigger and better korfball year ahead!
